A new two-part documentary on Channel 4, "Swiped: The School That Banned Smartphones," produced by BOLDPRINT Studios and hosted by Matt and Emma Willis, examines the impact of smartphones on young people. The experiment takes place at The Stanway School in Colchester, where Year 8 students challenge themselves to abandon their phones for 21 days, partnering with the University of York to measure changes in mental health, sleep, cognitive abilities, and social interactions.
The Smartphone Problem in Schools
The documentary addresses a growing concern: 50% of UK nine-year-olds own smartphones, and frequent social media use correlates with increased depression risk. An Education Select Committee report found that one in four children now uses their phones in a manner resembling behavioural addiction, with 43% of teens admitting to using smartphones during lessons.
During filming, Matt and Emma Willis consult with experts including Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, who emphasises that technology has insidiously crept into every part of our children's lives, including their school life.
Could Lockabl Provide the Answer?
Lockabl pouches offer a practical middle ground between complete bans and unrestricted access. Rather than extreme measures, these secure pouches allow schools to safely store phones during school hours while maintaining student ownership. This approach supports focus, reduces anxiety, and encourages healthier social interactions without requiring permanent phone confiscation.
The documentary concludes with reflections on lasting behavioural change. Matt Willis notes that they hope this experiment will spark change and have a lasting and positive impact on everyone. Lockabl enables schools and families to establish structured device boundaries during critical periods without eliminating technology entirely.
