Why phone pouches for home education?

Home education - home schooling, as it is often called - runs on self-discipline rather than bells and corridors, and a phone within arm’s reach is the hardest part of that. A Lockabl pouch seals the phone for an agreed block of time and opens on the Unlocker when the block ends. It stays with the young person throughout - nothing is handed over, nothing is taken away, and the decision to seal it can be theirs.

  • Deep, uninterrupted blocks for independent study
  • Tutor hours spent on the tutor, not the notifications
  • Home ed group sessions and co-ops that hold their focus
  • Realistic practice for exams sat as a private candidate
How it worksThree steps

How Lockabl works here

The phone is sealed into a pouch at the start of a study block and released on the Unlocker when it ends.

01

Pouch it

Each phone slides into a padded, weatherproof pouch that stays with its owner the whole time.

02

Lock it

A quick one-press lock seals the pouch shut - it can’t be opened until you allow it.

03

Release it

A tap on the magnetic Unlocker opens the pouch in a second. No queues, no handovers.

Good to know

Home Education: questions, answered

Is this not just school discipline brought into the house?

It works the other way round. There is no policy, no teacher and nobody confiscating anything - the phone never leaves its owner. Plenty of home-educating families hand the pouch to the young person and let them seal their own phone for a block they have chosen, which is closer to a focus tool than a rule.

Does it help with exams taken as a private candidate?

That is one of the most common reasons families get in touch. Phones are not permitted in the exam room, and sitting timed papers at home with the phone genuinely sealed away is far closer to the real thing than sitting them with it face-down on the table.

Do homeschooling families in the UK actually use these?

Yes, and the reasons given are consistent: an independent study block that keeps collapsing, a paid tutor hour disappearing into a screen, or a teenager preparing to sit GCSEs privately who has never taken a timed paper without a phone nearby. UK home education looks quite different from the American picture - smaller, less curriculum-driven, more built around groups and tutors - and a pouch fits that because it needs no institution behind it.

We meet as a group - can we share pouches between families?

Yes. A pouch is not tied to a phone or a person, so a handful of pouches and one Unlocker will cover a group session, a co-op or a study day and then move on to the next one.

Do we buy or hire?

For a household, buying a pouch and an Unlocker outright from the shop makes more sense than hiring. Hire is worth asking about for a larger group or a one-off study week - tell us the numbers and we will quote.

Will the phone still work while it is sealed?

Yes. Our pouches do not block signal, so calls, messages and emergency alerts all still come through - the phone simply cannot be taken out and used until it meets the Unlocker.
